In the Vineyard
We are turning our attention toward harvest planning as the grapes are moving from one stage to the next and beginning to turn color and soften. This stage in grape maturation is called 'veraison' and for red varieties, like Pinot Noir, it means they turn from green to red and in white varieties, like Chardonnay, they turn from green to a lighter translucent gold. In both cases the grapes are softening and the acid is metabolizing into sugar. This sugar-acid ratio is closely watched by growers and winemakers as it ultimately is the basis for the resulting wines. Birds, birds, birds...oh yes they love soft, sweet grapes too. We are vigorously protecting the fruit we have been growing all season by all means necessary; for us here at Riverbench it is a mix of bird net and scaring the birds to prevent them from landing in the vineyard. We use horns and distressed bird calls to frighten passing birds as it is difficult for them to eat when airborne!
